Many items that consumers use every day rely both on the accurate and reliable release and the application of liquids onto a surface or a substrate. Whether a cosmetic product transferring liquid eye-liner formula to an eye or a marker transferring ink to paper, these products would fail to work properly without functional solutions for managing the storage and output of their ingredients. Seemingly basic designs require a sophisticated interplay between different types of porous components – including both reservoirs for formula storage and applicators (also called nibs in writing instruments) – that work together to manage formula delivery to provide the specific user experience required by the manufacturer. Understanding the relationship between these porous polymer components, as well as the unique interactions between ingredients of different viscosities and materials with different porosities, is critical for mastering how application can be optimized in your product.
